The Phone That Lasts 15 Years on a Single AA Battery

A US firm has developed a mobile phone that it says can run on a single domestic AA battery and act as a back-up for at least 15 years. The SpareOne phone is a no-frills dual band GSM phone designed to act as an emergency backup handset.

The company says that "SpareOne is the only cellular phone in the world that runs on a single AA battery", although there was a Motorola handset released back in 1994, the "Personal Phone" that used 4 AA batteries and was also marketed at the emergency user.

"SpareOne's breakthrough technology provides an unprecedented lifeline during dire situations that require an emergency response," said Alan Cymberknoh, SpareOne Project Director at XPAL Power.

It boasts an incredible talk time of up to 10 hours and can keep its charge for up to 15 years if unused.

SpareOne, equipped with an Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA battery and a Micro SIM card, will be available in the USA shortly for $49.99.
